3 DIY Bathroom Plumbing Fixes

The DIY craze is still in full swing in 2017, and rightfully so. Taking on home repairs is a great way to save money, work with your hands and learn something new. While there are some plumbing jobs you should never try to tackle on your own (like a sewer line backup or leaky pipes) these other projects are a bit more DIY friendly.

Caulk Around the Bathtub

Not only does new caulk improve the appearance of your bathroom, it can actually prevent future damages.

Step 1: Remove the existing caulk with a knife or razor blade.

Step 2: Vacuum any fallen pieces or debris to make a clean work surface.

Step 3: Next, use a caulk gun to apply an unbroken line of caulk.

Step 4: Wet your fingertip or grab a damp rag and wipe down each line of caulk.

Install a New Bathroom Faucet

Whether your existing faucet is broken or you just want an updated look, a new faucet is relatively easy to install.

Step 1: Shut off the main water line.

Step 2: Disconnect the lift rod and remove the nuts from under the faucet.

Step 3: Unscrew the slip nut on the P-trap. Put a bucket underneath to catch any dripping water.

Step 4: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific fixture.

Pro tip: Before you buy a new faucet, take a look at the connection points on your existing fixture so you can find a new model with similar connections.

Improve Your Water Pressure

If you notice you’re losing water pressure in the shower, it’s most likely due to a build-up of hard water minerals.

Step 1: Remove your showerhead and spray plate.

Step 2: Soak the spray plate in a bucket of descaling solution for 10 – 15 minutes.

Step 3: Rinse the spray plate with warm water and reassemble the shower head.
