How to Fix a "Wobbling" Ceiling Fan

Shaking ceiling fan repairs

Why Is My Fan Shaking?

A wobbly fan is not only distracting and annoying, it can be incredibly dangerous. A little bit of wobbling is normal, but if your ceiling fan is clearly shaking, it can potentially come crashing down at any moment. If your fan is shaking or wobbling, here are a few ways you can fix it.

Step 1: Unscrew and remove the bracket housing from the ceiling.

Check the electrical box for a label that says “fan-rated box.” Then, look to see if it’s fastened with U-bolts or lag screws. If it is, they should connect the metal box to a support beam in the attic (or whichever room is above that ceiling).

Step 2: Shake the support bracket gently.

If it wiggles, even just a little, tighten it with a screwdriver.

Step 3: Secure the drop rod.

Most ceiling fans hang from a drop rod, so be sure that the ball joint at the top of the drop rod is tightly secured to the fan’s support bracket.

Step 4: Double check all screws and bolts.

Even one loose screw can threaten an entire ceiling fan.

Step 5: Measure your blades from the ceiling.

A low hanging blade can throw off the balance of a fan. Using a ruler or tape measure, measure how far each blade is from the ceiling. If one hangs further down than the others, it is most likely warped and needs to be replaced.

Step 6: Make sure the fan is properly supported.

If none of the above steps fixed your fan, it may be under-supported. Go into the attic (or room above the fan) and check to see if it is securely fastened to a support beam or block. If you don’t have easy access to your attic or aren’t sure which beams are strong enough to support a large fan, you should contact an electrician.
