How to Avoid a Plumbing Nightmare on Halloween

BY MITCH WRIGHT PLUMBING, HEATING & AIR

One of the biggest holidays that is celebrated across the country is Halloween! With pumpkins aligning every window and a wonderful array of vampires, witches, and zombies roaming around your neighborhood, it’s truly a celebration like no other! Now, even though this is a fun, joyful holiday, there’s also a downside: you can have a plumbing nightmare on your hands. And unlike your favorite horror movie, usually, the problem doesn’t go away on its own.

Without further a “boo,” here are some things to be mindful of on the big day:

Things to Avoid

Flushing Candy Wrappers

Are you hosting a Halloween gathering at your home? If so, there’s a chance that one of your smaller guests might feel inclined to flush their candy wrappers (and other loose ends in their pocket) down your toilet, rather than throwing them out in a nearby garbage can. And if that happens, then you might have a pretty severe clog on your hands — something that no ghost or ghoul ever wants to handle.

To avoid a problem, put garbage cans out in plain sight and make them accessible for your guests. If you need to go the extra mile, put a small garbage can in your bathroom (if one isn’t there, to begin with) and create a sign, urging guests to toss the garbage in there — not the toilet!

Dumping Pumpkin “Guts” in the Sink

If you like to carve pumpkins, especially on the big day, where do you dispose of their “guts” (seeds and filling) after you remove them? If you attempt to dump them down your sink drain, that can be a recipe for disaster — especially if you have a garbage disposal; the pumpkin’s insides could bog down the device.

To combat this, make sure that when you begin to scoop out the inside of your pumpkin, you “spill their guts” into a bowl or cup. Then, before you’re about to carve out the face, make sure to toss any of those pumpkin leftovers into a garbage can. By doing this, you’ll be saving yourself from a plumbing nightmare!
