Electrical Safety Tips for Homes with Kids

When was the last time you went a day without using electricity? For most of us, the answer is easy – never! In today’s day and age, we’re incredibly dependent on electricity to cook our food, light our houses, and charge our phones. But despite the many conveniences it brings us, electricity can still be dangerous, especially when little ones are around. But have no fear! With just a few small changes and updates, your home’s electricity can be made completely kid proof! If you have little ones wandering around the house, make sure to always:
- Cover-up all exposed outlets.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly 2,400 children suffer every year from severe shock and burns caused by items being poked into electrical outlets. Place a plastic or rubber covering over outlets to prevent any little fingers or toys from getting into them.
- Keep spare cords out of reach.
Make sure all of your electrical cords are tied up and stored out of reach from curious minds.
- Unplug all electrical devices after they are used.
Appliances with colorful buttons are attractive to little kids, so make sure to unplug small appliances, like hair dryers and chargers, after they’re used and store them safely.
- Educate your children.
Once your little ones aren’t so little, tell them about the importance of electrical safety. Teach them not to play with or go near electrical outlets, and the proper way to plug and unplug different devices.
The best way to keep your family safe from electric shock is to have your electrical panel updated and inspected regularly.
